I'm preparing for the trip to Slovenia, so I had to clean out all the stuff in my room. There's stuff here that's 10 years old...

A calendar from 1993

This is 5 New Dinars, they were worth 5 DM in 1994

Songs from Taizé

Newspaper from 1999

Newspaper from Poland. The city of Grozny is about to fall

Mortal Kombat 3 moves

Here's how I started my programming career.

Sljivovica from 1999

Artistic creations

During the sanctions in the 90'es, foreign snacks from Western Europe or elsewhere were not allowed to enter the country. Back then, the most popular snacks were these, smuggled from Turkey. Very good iirc.

It's a rather good idea of the government to spend the taxpayers' money on billboards proclaiming how Kosovo is part of Serbia. Or not... if they have to spend money on campaigning, then it would probably be better to campaign in the US and Western Europe to convince those people...

Well at least the printing business is making money...

This is Willy Brandt, a former chancellor of Germany, who, as far as I know, is only famous for falling on his knees in Auschwitz and appologizing for the evils his people have done. Since Serbia never appologized for murdering Kosovo Albanians, I can't think what idiot chose him for a billboard character.

This photo turned out blurry because the bus was shaking, but I thought it would be necessary to include at least one American president in this collection (there are more!)
Here Kennedy is saying "Man must do what his duty tells him - regardless of the consequences etc. etc."

Here's Charles de Gaule, who I guess actually would support Serbia in this matter, since he didn't mind killing tens of thousands of Algerians to keep that country inside France. Another good choice.

People walking in the snow

Yes, there are excellent skiing treks there, I guess it could become a tourist paradise if we remove the "second element" Thu 27-Dec-2007 14:35

and we get to see some new of those wonderful smart bomb pictures on CNN again as NATO bombs you back to the stoneage.

It's a win-win situation!

Rail tracks
Sign
People
View all 10 photos...
Today I went to the Slovenian embassy to hand over the final papers (described in a previous entry) for temporary residence permit. It took my whole day to do this (from 6 AM to 7 PM), but I'll get back to this later.

Trolleybus tracks in the snow

This sign is leaning

People on the streets

After handing over the papers, I went for a walk for two hours, after which I had to return to collect my passport. In the meantime, I found a place where I could buy a HUGE hamburger for only 1,5 EUR
This is some bus station near the hamburger store

At a park, there's this statue in honor of French soldiers that died in World War I

On its side is this carving of an infrantryman

The sign on the tree says there's rat poison placed in the ground here. Don't eat the snow!

City in the clouds... or fog... or smog...

OK so in the final part some rambling about the way embassies here treat people. I guess it won't change much, but everywhere on the Internet you can find topics about how immigrants are damaging the society and how they are evil etc. etc. and I can never find anything about the stuff immigrants have to go through before they reach their target destination. Or how their target destinaiton treats them...

So anyway, while I guess it's much worse for boatmen from Africa coming to Spain, this is how it is at myplace

This is the line in front of the Austrian embassy. There are around 100.000 people living and working in Austria that came from this country. It is without doubt that their contribution to the Austrian economy is significant. So why are these people standing out in the rain, snow and cold, waiting for a visa?

The Slovenian embassy was somewhat better, but still I stood in line, outside in the snow, for 2 hours, and then waited for another half an hour in the hallway. And then two hours later I had to go back to stand in the line again. It is just ridiculous to me that, because they know that so many people will come, they don't arrange some LESS HUMILIATING means of handling your passport. The visas are rather expensive and I guess at least a 100 people come to the embassy every day... and that's around 100*35*30 = ~100.000 EUR per month!
If we consider the Austrian embassy, there are probably 500 or more people going to that embassy, which makes the revenue of the embassy even more. I don't think it would take a lot of money to fix some simple room where people can sit or stand in the warm, or during summer in air-conditioned rooms.

Now if the response to this is that we deserved this, because we're an evil country etc. etc. then consider that from my point of view. My family never committed any war crimes. We always voted against the regime that did those crimes. How is it ok then that I have to go through this long, stressful and humiliating procedure?

I agree that it is our government's fault for not providing better passports that cannot be forged so easily, and because of this the procedure is too long and stressful... but providing a comfortable room at your embassy is not the responsibility of our government!

"Your embassy" includes: Italian, French, Slovenian, Dutch, Austrian, German and American. I don't know about the other embassies.

The embassies are huge villas, the French embassy looks like a fortress and the Austrian is like a large museum. Sat 22-Dec-2007 14:21

They make you stand in line because it builds character and weeds out the weak. They only want strong citizens of high moral character entering their countries as guest workers and potential future citizens. Wed 16-Jan-2008 20:07

Weird fingers

Apparently you need special genes to be able to do this kind of thing with your fingers

I know I can't...

This could've been the greatest picture in history, but it didn't turn out that way

These people probably wouldn't be happy to know that I'm placing their pictures on the Internets

But they only got themselves to blaim for undressing in public

Or who knows, if you climb on top of the bar table, you probably want to be seen.

New Year is near

Electric deer
City hall
2008
New Year is getting near and the city center is becoming more and more decorated. They've placed these electric deers next to the church

Next to the deers is a sign saying not to touch them, cause you'll get hit by electric shock.

The town hall is decorated as well

They already are in 2008

It still looks quite sad overthere. No warm colors at all... Sun 16-Dec-2007 01:15
