Pécs
|
|
We went to the city of Pécs in Hungary. There were no road signs and without a map we took the wrong turn and went through a road under construction.
It was dark everywhere. You can see a video about this.
Pécs at night
Soproni beer
Unicum
Borsodi beer
Rözsepecsenye. It tasted very good
A cathedral or a temple
Taxis here have GPRS!
TV tower
Another cathedral. This one is a world heritage site I think
It looks like this during day
I saw this photo of Horthy at a pub
Emblem of Hungary
On top of this postal building
Main square
Trinity
Main square again
Some wall depicting something
Horseman pointing at somewhere
Trinity again
Pigeon walking
This used to be a mosque when the Turks ruled the city, but then it was converted into a church
On top of it is a crescent combined with a cross. It's pretty cool
Locks on a wall. Apparently some people started placing locks for some reason, and later tourists came and saw this and thought it was some romantic tradition. So now couples come here and place their lock here
A drawing. I took the photo because it was not allowed to do so
Thrush
A statue
The bath of Memi pasa, built in the 16th century
Honey
Going back home. We crossed the Danube with a ferryboat
The blue Danube
Finally, here's a video of the trip back home

Djerdap
|
|
With nothing to do, I went to see the Djerdap national park, where I've never been before. It turned out to be much bigger than I thought, so I only managed to see like 1/3 of it, before I ran out of money and had to go home. I started walking from Golubac and stopped a few miles after Lepenski Vir
Djerdap is the part of the Danube where it crosses the Carpathian mountains. At some parts it is extremely wide, and at some parts it is extremely narrow. Here it almost looks like a sea
I can see the Golubac fortress in the distance. That's the entrance to the national park
No paths for people on foot. Later I was told by a park ranger that he saw only 3 people walking last year. So it was always exciting to think how you're going to get run down by some crazy driver
I'm approaching the fortress
It's a national park and a hunting ground. So you preserve nature, but you can also kill it
I've arrived to the fortress. It was probably built in the 14th century, and it's only historical significance is that Soulfly made one of their videos here in 2003.
I have no idea what this is. Looks like an ancient building carved into the mountain after the Apocalypse
One of the fortress' bastions.
This catacomb leads to nowhere, but it's filled with toilet paper. The minute I saw it I had to take a dump. Must be something magical about it.
Window to Romania
Lots of lizards and snakes here. Finns would love this place!
An old milestone, says SFRJ on it (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia)
An old, rusty buldozer
Duck
Squirel! I think I never saw one in the wild before
It really does look like a beach sometimes. And since there's no civilization anywhere the water doesn't seem to be polluted
Hut, next to another milestone
Lepenski Vir is the site of an archeological excavation. They've found an 8000 year old village here. These are some tools.
A figure
I like this one. Mr.Grumpy
The excavation. I was expecting more
To avoid going through tunnels (which could be dangerous on foot), I went through a side road. It reminded me of that road in Bolivia which is the most dangerous road in the world.
Nice...
Well, I'm approaching a tunnel and I can't avoid it this time. Luckily it doesn't seem to be very long
Light at the end of the tunnel!
It's pretty high up there
This bus stop was where I ended my trip. I calculated I have barely enough money to go home, I had no food and little water left, and my feet hurt. Next time I'm going by bike, or I'll find someone to take me by car.
It's a shame, cause there were a few more great stuff in the remaining of the national park, like emperor Traian's table where he crossed the Danube, or the statue of Decebalus
In Belgrade, I saw this sign: Fist Belgrade!
Apparently some art students are organizing it. If you want to Fist Belgrade then visit www.fistbelgrade.com

Some reggae concert. It was quite warm because of all the people, so this was the first time this year that I've spent the night out in the open

Best thing about Easter. Ham and eggs and radish
Some Gypsies left their chickens go out on the street
The tulips I've brought from Amsterdam finally started having flowers
We went fishing
There was this mutated fish
And swans...

I think last month they've made a new law where it is illegal to place flyers into mailboxes. I should call the police!

Niš
|
|
As I didn't know what to do today, I've decided to go to the south of the country where I've never been before. I've always wanted to visit the city of Niš, but either I never had the time, or it was too expensive or some other problems existed.
I had to make a stop by the capital city, to wait for an hour for the train to Niš to arrive
This is the Saint Sava temple. It's enormous, I've heard it's the biggest Orthodox temple on the Balkans
The statue in front of the temple has something inscribed on it in Old Slavic. I hope they don't expect anyone to understand what it means...
This was my seat at the train
Not very classy, but that's what you get when you pay $2 for a two-way trip to the other side of the country
And now... some nature photos. I've also made a video.
OK so I've arrived to Niš after an 8 hour jurney. The train was late 75 minutes, which took away precious time from me to look around at the city better...
Anyway, Niš is at the site of the ancient city of Naissus, the birthplace of Roman emperor Constantine the Great, the one that made Christianity the official religion of the empire. So the people here are really proud of him and they've named their main boulevard and their airport after him, and you can see little Constantine statues everywhere. I thought about buying one, but maybe next time...
The first thing I wanted to visit was the infamous Ćele kula (skull tower). When the Serbs rebelled against the Turks in 1809, there was a fierce battle near Niš that the Turks won. To scare the local population, they took the skulls of the fallen Serb soldiers and built a tower out of them.
Here's the sign
And this is a side of the tower. Only about 50 skulls remain built into the tower, as most have been taken out and the tower has been quite damaged. It is still a brutal sight
This is the skull of the hero Sindjelic. When he saw that the Turks are winning the battle, he shot into the powder storage and blew everyone up, killing around 10.000 Turkish soldiers.
Now that I think about it, if he blew himself up, then how did his skull survive?
Niš is very close to Leskovac, the city where the pljeskavica originates from. Pljeskavica is similar to hamburger, except it tastes better
They make them in these small houses with long chimneys. The town is filled with them.
A clock
On top of this building
Women in Niš are HOT! I guess because so many civilizations went through this region they've made people look better. I'll show you only this photo, and because I'm a good Christian I won't show her bottom in full resolution
Some statue. The guy is pointing towards the sky. This is probably the city's main square
Waiting for someone
OK, so this statue is in honor of the soldiers that liberated Niš from the Turks, 50-60 years after that incident with the skull tower
Big hotel
An old Turkish fortress. It looks good on the outside but is nothing special on the inside
The river Nišava
Monument to Obrenovic who was the guy that liberated the city I guess
And this is the famous pljeskavica I was talking about! OK, so it looks like a hamburger, but actually it's made out of different meat. Inside it has paprika, ham and goat cheese, and I've also added salad. I could have added more stuff but I didn't want to endanger my stomach as I was about to go back home
It cost less than $2, and it was SO big... well, look at my foot in the background. It was as big as my foot. I actually had to eat it in two sessions.
I had to wait for another half an hour at the capital city for my train to arrive...
This is the first thing you see when you come out from the train station. Makes you feel like you're in Amsterdam

Skins

I'm always amused by how human stupidity can never be destroyed. Being a skinhead was becoming un-cool back when I was in 3rd grade in high school, now it looks like it's cool again.

Random photos of nature etc.

A friend was celebrating his birthday at a bungallow near the river. I decided to go there on foot, it's around half an hour away from the city. I've used my old Canon A430 to take these photos.
This is the entrance to the place where the bungallows are. Shows what a great city government we have when they're allowing people to dump their trash here.
Tires
A friend of mine has a kid, a little girl. He's the only close friend I know that has a child, the rest of us will be waiting for a few more years...
Flower. Looks like spring is finally here!
A tree in the middle of a pond
Trees at the edge of the river
Cooking lunch. We had goulash, it was excellent.
