Driving in Germany

Near Munich
|
|
|
There was little time to get home, so we mostly drove through Germany, stopping by at some gas stations. Here they sell comic books with extra dick!
It's not like we're in a hurry...
This was near Munich I think

Den Haag
|
|
We went to The Hague to swim in the North Sea, and if possible, see some of our old friends there
The beach was not too crowded but not dead empty as I imagined it would be.
The water was actually quite warm. The problem was it was windy outside.
Bird
People playing
Danger sign. The waves were pretty large because of the wind, so I'd imagine it is a bit dangerous.
Unused stools
We didn't have much time left, but we did find the prison of the International Tribunal. Didn't have a clearance to see the people inside, though

Bruxelles
|
|
I liked Bruxelles, too bad we didn't have more time. We only tried around 15 types of beer, out of the 200-300
It was difficult to find a parking sppot, but eventually we did it.
Random church
Streets of Bruxelles, in the Turkish quarter I think
Candy shop, very expensive
This is the piss boy statue. It's really small.
This was pretty cool

Antwerp
|
|
We made a quick stop in Antwerp. It's a weird city, looks beautiful on the outside, but I had a weird feeling all the time. It had lots of weird monuments, diamond shops everywhere, Jews running around in their silly clothes, and sun flowers in the city center...
This is the train station. It is huge, has several levels, and is full of diamond stores.
Why would anyone plant sun flowers in the center of the city?
Statues on every 10 meters
A blind man
A huge cathedral
Pretty houses
Another weird statue. Looks like a legionare
People sunbathing in the "sea"
And this statue is in front of a museum dedicated to the Canadians that liberated the city in WW2. What is it supposed to represent?
A fountain

Amsterdam again
|
|
Since we have already seen most of Amsterdam a few years ago, we've decided to take a less touristy approach this time and just relax. We arrived at night but just in time to catch the last metro.
Some bar
I think we had the best camping site here. Everything we needed was provided, there were security guards and plenty of space.
We decided not to go to a tourist spot, but drop off at the suburbs. The first site we saw was a mosque
A flea market where everything is sold cheap! Unfortunately, everything is also of crap quality.

Köln
|
|
We made a quick stop in Köln to see the biggest cathedral in the world. This is not it
A Monthy Python's musical coming soon!
This is the cathedral. Unfortunately I never was able to capture the whole of it in one shot
Inside...
Outside...
Kölsch beer, a letdown. Luckily we were soon to arrive in the Netherlands where things will improve.
This is the Rhine river. It's similar to the Danube

Thüringia
|
|
After this, we went south to see one of the largest forrests in Europe, in Thüringia. The German government actually plans to halt all construction in this area, and let the forrest retake its place so in a few hundred years it would return to its natural state.
Wind towers along the way. Germany is filled with these
In Halle, we were reassured that we're still in East Germany
Next day, at the Altenberger see (lake) in the middle of Thüringia
People at the Mini Markt
Swimming
DDR kombi

Observing in the shadows

The gorillas all looked sad or pissed. They were just looking as people were taking photos of them.

Holocaust museum
|
|
We visited the Jewish museum in Berlin. It was really interesting and a bit scary. One room was filled with metal circles shaped like faces, and people can walk over them and they'd create a really creepy sound.
The museum then went on to display the hsitory of Jews in Germany, starting from the middle ages through the renessaince until modern times
The building is made of walls which are hollow in some parts. There holes are supposed to represent the fact that Jews are missing from the German society today
In the end we found an enormous empty black room, which was really scary and claustrophobic. This picture was taken with a flash light, otherwise there's no light in it at all.

The Spree river
Streets of Berlin
Checkpoint Charlie (replica)
They charge you 1 EUR to take a picture with the Soviet and American soldier
Part of the Berlin wall
Advertising
Cubes dedicated to the Holocaust
They look pretty cool. It's like a labyrinth, and mostly people run around it playing hide and seek
The horses on the Brandenburg gate
I think this is the Reichstag. It looked parlaiment-like, so it probably is...
Lego giraffe
Cool roof at the Sony center
The only disappointment was the hostel where we stayed. They put like 32 people in the same room
